North Central Texas Regional Meeting

Minutes

January 9, 2003

The North Central Region of Texas B.A.S.S. held their first quarterly meeting on Thursday January 9th at the Golden Corral Restaurant in Hillsboro, TX.

Charles Harkless called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m.

Representatives from the AFW Fishing Team, Bad Boys Bass Club, Heart of Texas, Tarrant Christian Bassmasters, Centex, Oilman's, Mansfield and Team Extreme bass clubs were in attendance.  Team Bass and Team Extreme have disbanded.

The P.V.A. tournament will be March 28th-30th at Lake Cedar Creek.  We will need 100 boats in order to accommodate everyone.

Mexican fishing licenses are needed at this year's State Tournament and information is available on the B.A.S.S. website on how to obtain one.  You must have both licenses to compete.

A couple of rule changes are: You can use a dip net but you cannot net your partners fish and you cannot fish or tell your teammates about your previous day partner's "spots" at the State Championship without his permission.

Charles handed out raffle tickets for the left over Minn Kota 65 lb. thrust trolling motor we are raffling off.  Sellers should sign the back of the tickets sold because they will get a $50 Academy/B.A.S.S. gift certificate.

We will use the new Speegleville ramp at Lake Waco and the Southport ramp at Richland Chambers for those regional tournaments.

Start position will be drawn the night before the tournaments at registration.

Dan Davenport will find an acceptable motel for the Granbury/Eagle Mountain tournaments.

Lowrance and Lucky Craft Lures are new sponsors this year.  Members are eligible for a big discount on Lowrance electronics and everyone at the State Championship will receive a Lucky Craft Lure.

Minn Kota has again this year donated 13 trolling motors and will give one club a trolling motor for the most community involvement, etc.  To be eligible, clubs must write an essay and have it submitted to Charles by February 15th to be considered.

Charles is looking into giving a ring to our North Central Region "Angler of the Year".

The state Casting Kids Competition will be held on Saturday Jan. 18th at the Mesquite Tackle show in the Big Town Center in Mesquite TX.  Be there by 10:00 a.m. to help.  The tackle show runs from the 17th-19th.

It was a cold day for the Little Buddies Championship at Lake Whitney on November 16th. but out of 15 or so competitors, only one or two didn't catch any fish, one of these was a kid whose mom had hired a guide for the day.

Randy talked about a meeting Dec. 8th in Austin about putting grass carp in Lake Austin.  TPW wants to put 6400 grass carp in the lake.  S.M.A.R.T. has hired a lawyer to see if suing the City of Austin would help delay the decision about putting grass carp in the lake.  Using a harvester would be the best way to control grass, but the homeowners on the lake don't want any grass.  Herbicides can work well but are toxic.  Phil Durocher, head of the TPWD said he wouldn't be happy until all the grass in Texas is gone.  Our hunting and fishing fees are being used for studies like this but should be used for restocking purposes.  Governor Rick Perry will probably raise all sports type fees and the increases could be used for grass carp, etc.  It was brought up that it might take an extreme measure like all fishermen with boats in tow to drive to the State Capital to make everyone realize that fishermen are against grass carp and there should be a better way to control and not eradicate grass.

Charles reviewed the upcoming events listed on the January agenda.

There was also a discussion on a unique regional "logo" for our Top Six Team.

The next meeting will be April 24th 7:00 at the Golden Corral Restaurant in Hillsboro, TX.

Don Schutze made a motion and the meeting was adjourned at 8:25.
